If the prosecutor decides to proceed with a case, the defendant is formally charged with the crime and taken to a holding cell. The defendant may be required to post bail to be released until trial. During this time the defendant may be required to undergo a body search, a health screen, a mug shot, and fingerprinting. Personal property will be identified and logged by the police officials. The process may take several hours and must be completed before a defendant can be released on bail.
