It may be that a client is prepared to plead guilty if the State reduces the charge to a lesser offence. The defence lawyer may engage in a process of plea bargaining with the prosecutor to try to get the State to reduce the charge. The State may be prepared to reduce the charge in order that the case can be disposed of on the basis of a guilty plea.
