Background
The right to appeal is fundamentally related to the right to due process and a fair trial.

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
Article 14, Section 5 -
"Everyone convicted of a crime shall have the right to his conviction and sentence being reviewed by a higher tribunal according to law." - International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 14, Section 5.
